Become a Volunteer

There are many exciting opportunities for people interested in joining our friendly, enthusiastic team of award winning* volunteers. As a charity, we rely entirely on volunteers to deliver our programme of tours and events, and to deliver a first-class service to our visitors.

Volunteer roles include:

  • Meeting and greeting visitors
  • Dreaming up events and making them happen
  • Giving tours of the windmill
  • Cataloguing the collection
  • Researching the history of Burwell and its people
  • Taking oral histories from local people
  • Fundraising
  • Helping to run the tea room.

Meeting and Greeting
Do you have spare time on Saturdays, Sundays and Bank Holiday Mondays?
We are looking for front-of-house volunteers from Easter Sunday to the end of October to greet our visitors in our Admission Hut or to serve them in our tea room.
No previous experience required but ideal for someone who is experienced.
Hours: 10am-1pm/1pm-4pm/10am-4pm. You let us know which shifts you can do on which dates. Even if you can only do one half-day a year that is still very helpful to us.
Free tea, coffee and biscuits on duty!

Windmill Maintenance
We are currently particularly interested in volunteers who want to help with the maintenance of our historic windmill,  Stevens' Mill. Maintenance is usually carried out on Tuesday daytimes all year round, apart from the Christmas-New Year period.  Ideal for anyone who enjoys working with wood, paint and grease and has a head for heights! (Not all maintenance is done at height and no volunteers are obliged to do anything they are uncomfortable with).  Knowledge of working on listed buildings, especially windmills, and local traditional building materials (clunch, lime, wood) would be useful but certainly not essential.
Free tea, coffee and biscuits provided!

Interested in joining us?
If you are interested in volunteering and have some spare time to assist us, we'd be delighted to hear from you. Please come to one of our Volunteer Recruitment Open Days on 17th February and 2nd March 2024 or fill in our volunteer form below or contact us at museum@burwellmuseum.org.uk with your details and a brief description of the areas that most interest you. Your help is always greatly appreciated!
